Most people feel little or no seasickness on a large cargo ship, but it can happen, especially in the first day or two or in heavy weather. Container ships are long, heavy and stable compared with ferries or small cruise ships, yet ocean swells still make them roll and pitch. The good news: seasickness is predictable and very manageable if you prepare.
Do cargo ships move a lot?
A large container ship is hundreds of metres long and weighs tens of thousands of tonnes, so in calm or moderate seas you may barely notice any movement. In ocean swells you will feel a slow roll from side to side and some pitching from front to back. On winter crossings of the North Atlantic or near the Cape of Good Hope, rough seas can last a day or more.

What causes seasickness?
Seasickness happens when your eyes, inner ear and body send your brain mixed messages about movement. Inside a cabin your eyes see a still room, but your inner ear feels the ship roll. Most people adapt within one to three days as they get their “sea legs”.
How to prevent seasickness
- Choose the season: summer crossings of the Atlantic and Mediterranean routes are usually calmer
- Pick a bigger ship for your first voyage if you can
- Start medication early: take tablets or apply a patch before you feel unwell, following the label or your pharmacist’s advice
- Eat light and regularly: an empty stomach makes nausea worse, so do greasy meals
- Stay hydrated and go easy on alcohol, especially on the first days
- Get fresh air: step out on deck and look at the horizon
- Sleep well: tiredness makes symptoms worse

Where is the best place to be on the ship?
Movement is felt most at the ends of the ship and on higher decks. Passenger cabins on container ships are in the accommodation block at the back, often several decks up. If you feel unwell, go to a lower deck or outside, look at the horizon and breathe slowly.
Seasickness remedies that help
| Remedy | How it helps | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Antihistamine tablets | Reduce nausea | Some cause drowsiness; ask your pharmacist which suits you |
| Hyoscine patches or tablets | Block motion signals | Prescription or pharmacy-only in some countries |
| Ginger | Settles the stomach | Biscuits, sweets or capsules |
| Acupressure wristbands | Pressure on the wrist point | Drug-free; results vary |
| Fresh air and horizon | Re-syncs your senses | Free and often the most effective |
Always ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking medication, especially if you have other prescriptions. Bring enough for the whole voyage, as there is no pharmacy at sea.
What if the weather turns rough?
The captain will warn passengers when heavy weather is expected. Secure loose items in your cabin, keep one hand for the ship on stairs, and rest if you feel unwell. Rough weather rarely lasts long, and most passengers find their sea legs quickly.
Frequently asked questions
Do you get seasick on a cargo ship?
Some people do, especially in the first day or two or in rough weather, but large container ships are stable and most passengers adapt quickly.
Are cargo ships more stable than cruise ships?
Large container ships are long and heavy, so they ride swells well, although they lack the stabilisers fitted to many cruise ships.
What is the best seasickness remedy?
Many travellers use antihistamine tablets or hyoscine patches, plus fresh air and looking at the horizon. Ask a pharmacist which is right for you.
Which season is calmest for freighter travel?
Summer is usually calmest on the North Atlantic and many other routes.
How long does seasickness last?
Most people get their sea legs within one to three days.
We can suggest larger ships and calmer seasons on the route you have in mind.
