Removals to New Zealand from the UK: Costs, Shipping Times and MPI Biosecurity (2026)

Last updated: 23 October 2026

New Zealand is about as far from the UK as you can move, and your container will be at sea for six weeks or more. Removals to New Zealand are well organised, but the country’s biosecurity rules are some of the strictest in the world. This guide covers 2026 costs, transit times, MPI inspections and the customs paperwork.

MPI biosecurity: what to expect

New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) inspects every household shipment.

  • Clean all outdoor items thoroughly: garden tools, bikes, shoes, tents, golf clubs, prams and outdoor furniture. Any soil or seeds means cleaning or treatment at your cost.
  • Do not pack: food, plants, seeds, soil, honey, animal products or untreated wood.
  • Declare wooden and wicker items, which may need inspection or fumigation.
  • Vacuum cleaners must be emptied and cleaned.
  • Don’t ship items with soil or straw packing.

Customs: duty-free relief

  • Unaccompanied baggage declaration: completed with your mover’s New Zealand agent
  • Duty and GST: household goods you have owned and used are generally exempt for people moving to New Zealand for the first time or returning residents, with conditions.
  • Documents: passport, visa or residence class, inventory and arrival details
  • Vehicles: cars face separate rules and possible GST. Check with NZ Transport Agency first.

Choosing a removals company

  1. Get three surveys and compare like for like.
  2. Check trade memberships, such as BAR Overseas or FIDI.
  3. Ask about destination charges, including MPI inspection fees.
  4. Clean outdoor items before packing day.
  5. Insure for full replacement value.
