Canada is one of the most popular destinations for British emigrants. It offers a familiar language, the Commonwealth connection, a strong economy and some of the world’s most spectacular scenery. With the right visa and a well-planned shipment, moving to Canada from the UK is very achievable, even if you are over 40 or 50.
Visa routes for UK citizens
| Route | Who it suits | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| International Experience Canada (Working Holiday) | Ages 18–35 | Open work permit, typically up to 2 years for UK citizens |
| Express Entry | Skilled workers | Points-based route to permanent residency |
| Provincial Nominee Programs | Workers wanted by a specific province | Can boost an Express Entry profile |
| Employer-specific work permits | People with a job offer | Often needs a Labour Market Impact Assessment |
| Family sponsorship | Spouses, partners and some relatives | Sponsored by a Canadian citizen or permanent resident |
| Start-up and self-employed routes | Entrepreneurs | Strict criteria |
Express Entry awards points for age, so it becomes harder after your mid-30s. Moving to Canada from the UK over 40 often works best with a job offer, a provincial nomination, French-language skills or Canadian work experience. Check the official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website for current rules.

How much does it cost to move to Canada?
- Visa and biometrics fees: from a few hundred to over a thousand Canadian dollars per person
- Proof of funds: Express Entry applicants without a job offer must show settlement funds
- Shipping a 20ft container: typically £4,500–£7,500 door to door
- Car shipping: around £1,500–£3,000, plus import compliance costs
- Flights: from around £300 one way off-peak
- Set-up costs: rental deposits, car insurance and winter clothing
Shipping your belongings to Canada
Containers from the UK usually sail to Halifax on the east coast or Montreal via the St Lawrence River, with rail connections inland to Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver.
- Sea time: about 8–12 days to Halifax or Montreal
- Door to door: typically 3–5 weeks to eastern Canada and 5–8 weeks to the west coast
- Customs: list your goods on form BSF186 (Personal Effects Accounting Document) and declare everything when you land. Goods to follow must be listed at your first entry, so keep a copy of the inventory with you on the flight.
A shared container (groupage) can work well if you are only shipping a few rooms. Read our guide to international removals from the UK to compare options.
Can I take my car to Canada?
You can, but UK right-hand-drive cars are not common in Canada and some vehicles cannot be imported. Cars must meet Canadian safety and emissions standards, apart from vehicles over 15 years old. Many people find it easier to sell their car in the UK and buy locally.

Where to live
- Ontario (Toronto, Ottawa): the biggest job market, with high housing costs
- British Columbia (Vancouver, Victoria): mild climate, very expensive housing
- Alberta (Calgary, Edmonton): no provincial sales tax, strong wages, more affordable homes
- Nova Scotia (Halifax): a relaxed coastal lifestyle, and Canada’s main Atlantic port
- Quebec: French-speaking, with its own immigration system
Arriving by sea
Ocean travel to Canada has a long history. Today, a few container ships still carry passengers between Europe and Halifax or Montreal. It is a slow, peaceful way to begin a new life, and gives you a very generous luggage allowance. See our cargo ship to Canada guide.
