Cargo Ship to the Caribbean: Freighter Voyages from Europe

Last updated: 23 October 2026

The Caribbean islands rely on ships for almost everything, so container ships cross from Europe to the Caribbean every week. A few take passengers, offering a flight-free route to turquoise water and island ports. Here’s how cargo ship travel to the Caribbean works.

Visas and entry

  • Guadeloupe and Martinique: French territories; UK citizens can visit visa-free for short stays.
  • Jamaica, the Dominican Republic and most other islands: UK citizens can usually visit visa-free for tourism.
  • Onward travel: some islands ask for proof of onward travel, which can be tricky when you arrive by ship. Ask your agent.

Island hopping after your voyage

Once in the Caribbean, you can island-hop by ferry, small cargo boats or inter-island flights. Some travellers continue through the Canal de Panama to the Pacific.
