Traverser le canal de Panama à bord d'un cargo : à quoi s'attendre

Dernière mise à jour : 22 octobre 2026

Crossing the Panama Canal is one of the great highlights of cargo ship travel. In a single day your ship climbs from one ocean, crosses a vast man-made lake and descends to the other, through locks so tight the ship seems to fill them wall to wall. Here is what happens and how to enjoy it as a passenger.

How the canal works

Ships do not sail over the mountains of Panama; they are lifted. A series of lock chambers fill with water from Gatun Lake, raising the ship step by step. After crossing the lake and the narrow Culebra Cut, the ship is lowered again to sea level on the other side. Small electric locomotives, called mules, help guide ships through the original locks.

How long does the crossing take?

The transit itself takes roughly 6 to 8 hours, depending on traffic, weather and water levels. But ships often wait at anchor for their booked slot, so the whole process from arrival to exit can take a day or more. Water levels in Gatun Lake also affect how many ships can transit, especially in dry periods.

Neopanamax and original locks

Since the expansion opened in 2016, larger Neopanamax ships use new, wider locks with water-saving basins. Smaller ships still use the original locks with their mules and close-quarters views. Which one your ship uses depends on its size.

Where to watch from on board

  • The bridge wing: if the captain allows, the best view of the pilot, mules and lock walls
  • The upper decks of the accommodation block: wide views ahead and astern
  • The bow area: only with crew permission, and never during critical manoeuvres

A Panama Canal pilot boards to take the ship through. Stay out of the way, ask before taking photos on the bridge, and enjoy one of the world’s great engineering feats.

Routes that cross the canal

Container services between Europe or the US East Coast and the west coast of the Americas, Asia or Australasia may use the Panama Canal. Ask us which current sailings include a canal transit if it is on your bucket list.

Tips for canal day

  • Be up early: transits often start at dawn
  • Pack sun cream, a hat and water
  • Charge your camera and clear your memory card
  • Be patient: waiting at anchor is part of the experience
