Dubai is one of the most popular destinations for British expats, and the removals route is well established. Most household moves go by sea to Jebel Ali, one of the biggest container ports in the world, with smaller shipments by air. This guide covers 2026 costs, timings, UAE customs and what you can’t bring.

UAE customs: documents you need

UAE customs (Dubai Customs) clears household goods at Jebel Ali. Your mover’s Dubai agent will usually need:

A copy of your passport with your UAE residence visa
Your Emirates ID, or proof that it is being processed
A detailed inventory in English
A signed customs declaration and letter of authority
In some cases, an entry stamp and your tenancy contract

Used household goods are generally cleared duty-free for new residents. Your residence visa is usually required before your goods can clear, so time your shipment to arrive after your visa is issued, or budget for storage at the port.

Items you cannot bring to the UAE

The UAE has strict import rules:

Medicines: many prescription drugs are controlled, including some common UK painkillers and ADHD medication. Check with the UAE Ministry of Health before you pack.
Banned items: recreational drugs, e-cigarettes in large quantities, gambling equipment, and items considered offensive
Books and media: material deemed offensive may be inspected or confiscated.
Alcohol: shipping alcohol in household goods is generally not allowed.
Firearms and weapons: need special permits.

Tips for moving to Dubai

Ship less. Many rental apartments and villas come furnished, and the heat makes some UK furniture impractical.
Check your electricals: the UAE uses 220–240V and UK-style three-pin plugs, so most UK appliances work.
Avoid summer moves if you can: June to September temperatures reach 45°C, which makes delivery days hard.
Get three quotes and confirm the Dubai agent and their charges.
