The Netherlands is one of the quickest international removals from the UK. Direct ferries from Hull, Harwich and Newcastle arrive at Rotterdam (Europoort), Hook of Holland and IJmuiden overnight, so many full loads are delivered the day after collection. The tricky parts are customs since Brexit and access to narrow Dutch streets and steep canal-house stairs.
Removals to the Netherlands: typical costs in 2026| Destination | 2–3 bedroom house (full load) | Part load (about 200–400 cu ft) |
|---|---|---|
| Rotterdam, The Hague, Leiden | £2,000–£3,500 | £800–£1,500 |
| Amsterdam, Haarlem | £2,200–£3,800 | £850–£1,600 |
| Utrecht, Amersfoort | £2,100–£3,600 | £800–£1,500 |
| Eindhoven, Brabant | £2,200–£3,700 | £850–£1,600 |
| Groningen, the north | £2,400–£4,000 | £950–£1,700 |
Indicative prices. A furniture lift (verhuislift) for upper floors, parking permits and city-centre access can add £200–£600.

Ferry routes used for Dutch removals
| UK port | Dutch port | Crossing |
|---|---|---|
| Harwich | Hook of Holland | About 7 hours |
| Hull | Rotterdam (Europoort) | Overnight, about 11 hours |
| Newcastle | IJmuiden (Amsterdam) | Overnight, about 16 hours |
| Dover or Folkestone | Calais, then by road | Short crossing plus about 4 hours’ drive |

Canal houses and furniture lifts
Many Dutch homes have narrow, steep staircases. Movers often bring furniture in through the windows:
- Hoisting beams: many canal houses have a beam and hook at the top of the façade for this.
- Furniture lifts (verhuislift): a ladder lift on a truck that carries items to upper windows
- Permits: cities such as Amsterdam need a permit to park a removal lorry or place a lift on the street. Your mover or Dutch agent should arrange it.
Customs after Brexit
Household goods arriving from Great Britain are imported into the EU through Dutch customs (Douane).
- Relief for moving your residence: used personal belongings you have owned for over six months are usually exempt from duty and VAT.
- Documents: an inventory, your passport, proof of registration in the Dutch municipality (BRP), proof of your UK residence and a residence permit if you need one
- Restricted items: meat and dairy, plants, weapons, and alcohol and tobacco beyond allowances
Register with your municipality
You must register your address with the local municipality (gemeente) to get your citizen service number (BSN). You need it for work, banking, healthcare insurance and tax.
Tips for a smooth move
- Get three quotes from companies with regular Benelux runs.
- Measure doorways and stairs at your Dutch home.
- Ask if a furniture lift is included.
- Book 4–6 weeks ahead, and more in summer.
- Declutter, because Dutch homes are often smaller than UK houses.
