How Far Ahead to Book a Cargo Ship Voyage (2026)

Last updated: 4 November 2026

For most freighter routes in 2026, you should book 12 to 18 months ahead, and longer for the most popular voyages. Cargo ships carry very few passengers, so cabins sell out long before departure. In autumn 2026, one leading agent listed Europe–South Africa as full for 2026 and heavily booked for 2027.

Quick answer
  • Long-haul freighters: book 12–18 months ahead, or join a waitlist.
  • Popular niche ships (St Lawrence, British Columbia): waitlists run into 2028.
  • Short European, Baltic and Mediterranean legs: often bookable a few months out.
  • Expect a deposit to hold the cabin and the balance around 70 days before sailing.
  • Last-minute berths exist, but mainly through cancellations. Be flexible.

This guide is about timing. For the step-by-step process of choosing an agent and filling in forms, see our guide on Come prenotare un viaggio su una nave da carico.

Why freighter cabins sell out so early

A cargo ship is not a cruise ship. Most carry somewhere between 2 and 12 passengers. Twelve is the usual ceiling, because a ship carrying more than 12 passengers must be certified as a passenger ship under international rules. Many vessels offer only a handful of cabins.

Supply has also shrunk. Cargo Ship Voyages says transatlantic, Europe–South America, transpacific, Australia/New Zealand and round-the-world freighter trips are generally no longer possible with any shipowner or agent. It expected a transatlantic update in late autumn 2026. With fewer routes open, demand concentrates on the few that remain.

The result is simple. When a route has four cabins and sails a few times a year, the first people to enquire get the berths.

Aranui V is a larger passenger-cargo ship, so it has more cabins than a pure freighter. That is why it remains bookable when smaller ships are not.

When are schedules released?

Freighter schedules follow cargo, not holidays. Agents usually publish next year’s sailings once the shipowner confirms them, and some lines release dates in batches. Cargo Ship Voyages, for example, listed Nordstjernen’s 2027 sailings as “bookable soon” without dates in September 2026.

The practical rule: register your interest before dates appear. Agents often offer new sailings to people already on their list. Ask to be put on a waitlist for your preferred route and month.

Even confirmed dates move. Port congestion, weather and cargo changes can shift departure by days. That is another reason to plan early and keep the rest of your trip flexible.

Deposits, balance and paperwork timeline

Payment terms vary by agent and line. As one published example, Freighter Cruises (for Aranui and Bella Desgagnés) asks for a 25% deposit, minimum €200 per person, with the balance due 70 days before sailing. It accepts card payment by PayPal only for short-notice bookings. Port fees of €20 per person per week are paid in cash on board.

Many lines require a doctor-signed medical certificate, and some set upper age limits. Rules differ by ship, and some agents want the form completed close to departure. Ask your agent exactly when it must be dated. Our guide to freighter age limits and medical certificates covers the detail.

Can you book last minute?

Sometimes, but do not count on it. Freighters rarely discount unsold cabins, because the shortage is space, not demand. Last-minute berths mostly appear when someone cancels or fails the medical check.

Your odds improve if you are flexible on date, direction and cabin. On Europe–South Africa, the agent noted northbound sailings are the likeliest to have space. Short European and Baltic legs are the best bet for a trip within a few months.

If you do get a late berth, check the payment terms. Short-notice bookings may need full payment at once.

Consigli

  1. Enquire with two or three specialist agents at once. Their allocations differ.
  2. Join waitlists early. Ask how many people are ahead of you.
  3. Give agents a date range, not a single date.
  4. Consider the less popular direction or season.
  5. Book flights and hotels on flexible fares only.
  6. Buy insurance that covers delays and cancellation as soon as you pay the deposit.
  7. Check your medical paperwork deadline the day you book.

Domande frequenti

How far in advance should I book freighter travel?

For long-haul routes, 12 to 18 months ahead. Some popular ships have waitlists into 2028. Short European legs can often be booked 2 to 6 months out.

Is Europe to South Africa by cargo ship available in 2026?

In September 2026, Cargo Ship Voyages listed 2026 as full and 2027 as heavily booked, with northbound sailings most likely to have space.

How many passengers does a cargo ship carry?

Usually between 2 and 12. Ships carrying more than 12 passengers must be certified as passenger ships, so most freighters stay at or below that number.

When do I pay for a freighter voyage?

Terms vary. One published example is a 25% deposit (minimum €200) on booking and the balance 70 days before departure.

Can I book a cargo ship last minute?

Occasionally, through cancellations. Discounts are rare. Flexibility on date and direction gives the best chance.

Can I still cross the Atlantic by freighter?

Cargo Ship Voyages said in 2026 that transatlantic freighter passages are generally no longer possible, with an update expected in late autumn 2026.
