Freighter Delays and Itinerary Changes: What Happens (2026)

Last updated: 4 November 2026

Freighter delays are normal: cargo ships run to commercial schedules, and in 2026 only around half of container vessels arrive on time. A passenger berth rides along with the cargo, so when the ship waits, you wait. Planning for slack is part of the trip.

Quick answer
  • Sea-Intelligence measured global schedule reliability at 50.6% in September 2026. Late ships averaged 6.65 days behind.
  • Main causes: port congestion, weather, blank sailings and route diversions such as the Cape of Good Hope detour.
  • Embarkation dates can move by days, and ports can be added or skipped with little notice.
  • How extra days are charged depends on your agent’s terms. Ask before you pay.
  • Book flexible flights, add buffer hotel nights and buy insurance with travel-delay cover.

How common are freighter delays in 2026?

The best public measure is Sea-Intelligence’s Global Liner Performance (GLP) report. It tracks the share of container vessels arriving within one day of schedule. It covers cargo, not passengers, but passengers sail on these same ships.

2026 began with reliability of 62.4% in January. It fell to 59.0% in February and reached a 2026 high in May. It then dropped to 56.4% in July and 49.9% in August. August was the lowest since September 2022, with Sea-Intelligence pointing to congestion at Asian ports. September recovered slightly to 50.6%.

July56.4%Decline begins
August49.9%Lowest since Sept 2022; late ships 6.81 days behind

Carriers differ. In September 2026 Maersk was the most reliable of the top 13 carriers at 64.8%; Wan Hai was lowest at 26.7%. For comparison, reliability held in roughly the 65% range for much of 2025.

The four usual reasons a cargo ship falls behind schedule.

Why cargo ship schedules shift

Port congestion

Container ships book berth windows. Miss one and the ship may wait at anchor for days. Congestion at Asian hubs drove the August 2026 slump.

Meteo

Masters slow down or reroute around storms, and pilots may stop boarding in heavy weather. Our guide to a cargo ship in a storm explains what that feels like on board.

Blank sailings and port swaps

A blank sailing is a cancelled departure on a regular service, often when cargo demand is weak. Lines also add, swap or omit ports to recover time. Your joining or leaving port can change as a result.

Canal and chokepoint disruption

From late 2023, attacks on shipping pushed most container lines away from the Red Sea and around the Cape of Good Hope. That detour adds well over a week on Asia–Europe routes. The return has been stop-start. Maersk made test transits in late 2025, then paused again in early 2026 after US–Iran hostilities. MSC began restoring Suez routings on selected services in August 2026. By the end of August, Sea-Intelligence estimated only 19% of Asia–North Europe westbound services used Suez. Read our Suez Canal transit guide for the route itself.

The Panama Canal shows the same risk. Drought in 2023, one of the driest years on record there, lowered Gatun Lake. The canal cut daily transits and draught limits, causing queues. Restrictions were lifted in mid-2024. See our Panama Canal transit guide.

What passenger terms usually cover

Freighter passengers are not cruise guests. The ship sails for the cargo, and booking conditions reflect that. Fares are usually quoted per day; one Australian report put the average at around US$100 a day (indicative). Wording varies by line and agent, so read your own conditions. The table shows what to check.

IssueWhat to check in your terms
Extra days at seaWhether added days are charged at the daily rate, and who pays
Shorter voyageWhether unused days are refunded
Embarkation dateHow far it may move, and how much notice you get
Port omissionWhether the line can land you at a substitute port
Cancellation by the lineRefund or rebooking rights
Your costs ashoreHotels, flights and transfers are normally your own responsibility

How agents notify passengers

Expect firm dates only close to sailing. Agents usually pass on the line’s updated estimated time of arrival (ETA) by email or phone. Once aboard, the master or officers are the best source for revised ETAs. Keep your phone reachable and check messages at each port.

Consigli

  1. Treat every date as an estimate until the final week.
  2. Book flexible or refundable flights at both ends.
  3. Reserve refundable hotel nights near the port before and after the voyage.
  4. Acquista assicurazione di viaggio that names travel delay and missed departure.
  5. Ask in writing how extra or fewer days are charged.
  6. Budget for extra days; see cargo ship travel costs.
  7. Pack spare medication for at least a week beyond the planned end date.

Domande frequenti

How often are cargo ships late?

In September 2026 Sea-Intelligence measured global schedule reliability at 50.6%, so roughly half of container ships arrived more than a day off schedule.

How late are delayed cargo ships on average?

Late vessels averaged 6.81 days behind in August 2026 and 6.65 days in September 2026, according to Sea-Intelligence.

Do I pay extra if a freighter voyage takes longer?

It depends on your booking conditions. Fares are usually quoted per day, so ask your agent in writing how added or lost days are handled.

Can my embarkation port or date change?

Yes. Lines can move dates, swap ports or omit calls for commercial or operational reasons, sometimes at short notice.

Are ships still avoiding the Red Sea in 2026?

Partly. Some MSC, Maersk and CMA CGM services returned to Suez in 2026, but by late August only about 19% of Asia–North Europe westbound services used Suez.

What insurance should I get for freighter delays?

Choose a policy that explicitly covers travel delay, missed departure and extended trips, and confirm it covers cargo ship voyages.
