Travel by Cargo Ship With Your Car: Shipping a Vehicle and Sailing With It

Last updated: 26 October 2026 · By Steve Joury, cargo trip advisor at CargoHolidays

You can sometimes travel by cargo ship with your car: ro-ro (roll-on roll-off) ships that carry vehicles also take a few passengers on some routes, so you and your car arrive together. It’s popular with overlanders, campervan travellers and people moving abroad. Here’s how it works and what to check.

Key facts at a glance

  • Ro-ro ships carry cars, vans and trucks on internal decks driven on by ramp.
  • Some ro-ro lines carry a few paying passengers on selected routes.
  • You pay a passenger fare plus a separate vehicle freight charge.
  • Customs paperwork such as a carnet may be needed.
  • Plan for strict rules on what can be left inside the vehicle.

How it works

Most cars shipped overseas travel on ro-ro ships: huge floating car parks that vehicles are driven on and off by ramp. Some ro-ro lines have passenger cabins, which means you can travel by cargo ship with your car on the same voyage. You check the vehicle in at the terminal, board as a passenger, and collect your car at the destination port after customs clearance.

Not every route allows it, and cabins are limited. Read our explainer on what a ro-ro ship is to understand the vessels.

Who uses this kind of voyage?

  • Overlanders crossing continents in 4x4s or campervans, for example Europe to South America or West Africa.
  • People relocating who want to keep their car.
  • Classic car owners heading to rallies or tours abroad.
  • Motorbike travellers on long trips.

Sailing with your vehicle: the essentials.

Costs: passenger fare plus vehicle freight

You pay twice: a passenger fare (roughly €100–150 per person per day, full board – see coût d'un voyage à bord d'un cargo) and a freight rate for the vehicle based on its size, usually in cubic metres. Add port handling charges, customs, documents and insurance for the vehicle.

Paperwork and rules for your vehicle

  • Original registration documents and proof of ownership.
  • A carnet de passages or temporary import permit for some countries.
  • Marine insurance for the vehicle during shipping.
  • Vehicles generally must be clean (especially for Australia and New Zealand biosecurity) and often empty of personal belongings.
  • Low fuel, disconnected alarms and a spare key for the crew.
Tip: If you are only shipping the car and flying or sailing separately, a specialist car shipping company may be cheaper and simpler. See our sister sites 1ExpressAuto et Motor-Import for vehicle shipping.
