New Zealand drives on the left, so UK right-hand-drive cars are a good fit. Many people moving to New Zealand ship a car they love, or a campervan for touring. But New Zealand has some of the world’s strictest rules on biosecurity and vehicle standards, so preparation is everything.
Ro-ro or container?
| Method | Typical sea time | Indicative cost (UK to Auckland) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ro-ro | About 6–8 weeks | Around £2,000–£3,500 | Car must be empty |
| Shared 40ft container | About 6–8 weeks | Around £2,500–£4,000 | Better protection |
| Sole-use container | About 6–8 weeks | Around £3,500–£5,500+ | Can include household goods |
Arrival ports include Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington and Lyttelton. Add New Zealand port charges, biosecurity inspection, compliance and registration.

Biosecurity: clean it properly
New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) inspects every imported vehicle. Any soil, seeds, insects or plant material can lead to cleaning charges and delays. Before shipping:
- Steam-clean the underbody, wheel arches and engine bay
- Vacuum carpets and the boot, and remove mats
- Empty the car completely (for ro-ro)
- Clean bike racks, tow bars and spare wheels
Vehicle standards and compliance
Vehicles must meet New Zealand’s rules, including frontal impact standards for many cars and emissions requirements. Once the car arrives, it goes through entry certification with an approved inspector, who checks its structure, safety features and documents. Some modifications may be needed.
Tax: GST and duty
New Zealand charges GST at 15% on the value of imported vehicles, plus fees. If you are moving to New Zealand and have owned and used the car for at least a year before it is shipped, you may qualify for a concession that reduces or removes GST. Check the current rules with the New Zealand Customs Service before you ship.

Registration
- Customs and biosecurity clearance
- Entry certification by an approved inspector
- Warrant of Fitness (WoF), New Zealand’s MOT equivalent
- Registration and NZ number plates
- Road user charges if the vehicle is diesel
Is it worth it?
Shipping a car halfway around the world is not cheap. It often makes sense for classic cars, campervans and newer, high-value vehicles. For older everyday cars, selling in the UK and buying a Japanese import in New Zealand can be cheaper.
