Moving to Italy from the UK: Visas, Residency, Healthcare and Costs (2026 Guide)

Last updated: 23 October 2026

Italy draws British movers with its food, landscapes, history and slower pace of life. Since Brexit, UK citizens need a national (type D) visa to live there for more than 90 days in 180. This guide covers the main visa routes in 2026, the paperwork after you arrive, healthcare, tax and the cost of living.

After you arrive: the paperwork

  1. Permesso di soggiorno: apply at the post office within 8 days of arrival, using the kit for the residence permit.
  2. Codice fiscale: your tax code, needed for almost everything. You can get it before moving through the consulate.
  3. Residenza: register at the town hall (comune). The police may visit to confirm you live there.
  4. Healthcare (SSN): register with the national health service at the local ASL. Some people must pay an annual contribution or have private insurance.
  5. Driving licence: UK licence holders usually need to exchange theirs within a year of residence.

Tax in Italy

  • Residence: you are usually tax resident if you live in Italy for more than 183 days a year, or have your main home or interests there.
  • Flat tax for foreign pensions: some regions in the south, in towns under 20,000 people, offer a 7% flat tax on foreign income for new residents, with conditions.
  • The UK–Italy tax treaty helps avoid double taxation.

Tips for living in Italy

  • Learn Italian. Outside the big cities, English is less common.
  • Expect bureaucracy. Patience and a good commercialista (accountant) help.
  • Choose your region carefully: north and south feel like different countries.
  • Join local life: markets, festivals and the passeggiata.
