The only way to get to Tristan da Cunha is by ship from Cape Town. There is no airport, no airstrip and no ferry service. A handful of fishing and supply ships make the 2,810 km voyage fewer than a dozen times a year, and you need permission from the island before you can book a berth. Here is how it works in 2026, what it costs and how to plan.
- Depart: Cape Town, South Africa
- Voyage: about 6 days each way
- Ships: MV Lance, MFV Edinburgh, SA Agulhas II
- Fare: from R4,475 one way on the Agulhas II
- Permission: required for every visitor
Why there is only one way in
Tristan da Cunha sits in the South Atlantic, roughly halfway between South Africa and South America. Its 221 residents (2026) live in one village, Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, beneath the 2,062-metre volcano Queen Mary’s Peak. The island has no flat land long enough for a runway, and its tiny Calshot Harbour can only take small boats, so ships anchor offshore.
That makes it the most remote inhabited island on Earth, and one of the few places where a cargo ship voyage is not an alternative to flying but the only option.
The ships that sail to Tristan
| Schiff | Typ | Passagiere | Anmerkungen |
|---|---|---|---|
| MV Lance | Fishing and cargo vessel | About 12 | Most 2026 sailings |
| MFV Edinburgh | Fishing and cargo vessel | Small numbers | Carries the island’s supplies and crayfish catch |
| SA Agulhas II | South African research and supply ship | 40+ | Annual Gough Island relief; flies passengers ashore by helicopter |

The fishing vessels are working ships: you eat with the crew, cabins are simple and the voyage can be rough. The SA Agulhas II is larger and steadier, and it calls at Tristan on its way to relieve the weather station on Gough Island, so it usually stays only a few days before returning.

2026 sailing schedule
The island publishes a provisional timetable each year. All dates move with weather and cargo, and in September 2026 the island and the South African Antarctic programme listed different departure dates for the Agulhas II, so always confirm directly.
| Schiff | Leaves Cape Town | Arrives Tristan | Leaves Tristan |
|---|---|---|---|
| MFV Edinburgh | 21 Jan | 28 Jan | 11 Mar |
| MV Lance | 17 Feb | 25 Feb | 3 Mar |
| MV Lance | 15 Apr | 23 Apr | 29 Apr |
| MV Lance | 17 Jun | 25 Jun | 1 Jul |
| SA Agulhas II | 25 Sep (sailed) | 30 Sep | 18 Oct |
Provisional 2026 dates from the Tristan da Cunha Government. 2027 sailings are posted once confirmed.
How much it costs
| Artikel | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| SA Agulhas II, adult | R4,475 one way, R8,950 return |
| SA Agulhas II, child 6–15 | R2,250 one way (under 6 free) |
| MV Lance or MFV Edinburgh, tourist | Around US$500 one way, US$1,000 return |
| Guesthouse or homestay | Roughly £25–£65 per person per night |
| Flights to Cape Town and hotel nights | Extra; allow spare days |
| Travel insurance with evacuation cover | Essential |
The island has said fares will change from 2027 when a new passenger vessel enters service, so treat these as 2026 prices.
How to arrange your visit, step by step
- Choose a sailing from the provisional schedule, ideally a year ahead.
- Apply for permission. Every visitor needs approval from the Administrator and Island Council. Residents, officials and islanders’ families get priority for berths.
- Arrange accommodation through the island’s tourism office. There are no hotels.
- Buy your ticket: Table Bay Marine in Cape Town issues Agulhas II tickets; Ovenstones issues Lance and Edinburgh tickets.
- Book flexible flights. Ships leave when loading is done, and the return depends on the next sailing.
- Get insurance that covers medical evacuation from a remote island. See our cargo ship travel insurance guide.

Arriving and staying on the island
When the ship anchors, passengers go ashore by small boat or, from the Agulhas II, by helicopter. If the swell is too big you wait on board, sometimes for days. Visitors stay with families or in self-catering guesthouses in the village. The economy runs largely on cash in pounds sterling, so bring enough for your whole stay.
Things to do include walking to the potato patches, climbing Queen Mary’s Peak with a local guide, visiting the 1961 volcano that forced the whole population to evacuate to Calshot near Southampton until 1963, and seeing albatrosses, penguins and seals.

Best time to visit Tristan da Cunha
The southern summer, from November to March, brings milder temperatures and calmer seas, so landings are more likely. Winter voyages in June and July can mean long waits at anchor. Spring is when the SA Agulhas II usually sails, giving you a larger ship and a helicopter landing, but only a short window before it returns.
| Season | Months | Was Sie erwartet |
|---|---|---|
| Summer | Dec–Feb | Mildest weather, best landing odds, breeding seabirds |
| Autumn | Mar–May | Cooler, still good walking weather |
| Winter | Jun–Aug | Rough seas, more delays, fewer visitors |
| Spring | Sep–Nov | Agulhas II voyage season; changeable weather |
Tristan da Cunha vs St Helena
People often plan both. St Helena, about 2,400 km to the north, now has an airport with flights from Johannesburg, so it is far easier to reach. Tristan has no air link at all, which is exactly why so few people ever get there. If you want the ship to be part of the adventure, Tristan is the one.
Tips before you go
- Plan for weeks, not days: most stays run from one ship to the next.
- Take seasickness remedies for the South Atlantic. Our seasickness guide explains what works.
- Bring cash and anything you need: the island has one shop.
- Expect no mobile signal and very limited internet.
- Be flexible: weather and cargo decide every date.
