A writing retreat at sea means booking a passenger cabin on a cargo ship, or a passenger-freighter, and using the long days between ports to write. You get a private cabin, three meals a day with the officers and very little internet. For many writers and artists, that combination is the point. This guide covers who has done it, the residencies that exist, and how to plan your own in 2026.
- Most cargo ships take up to about 12 passengers, so the ship is quiet and the days are yours.
- Expect roughly €90–€150 per person per day in 2026, cabin and meals included (indicative).
- A transatlantic crossing takes about 9–14 days; longer routes give you weeks of uninterrupted time.
- Internet is limited or paid. Plan to write offline and download research before you sail.
- Formal residencies at sea exist but are rare and competitive. Most writers organise their own voyage.
If you need to keep a job going while you sail, read our separate guide to working remotely from a cargo ship. This post is about the opposite: switching off and making creative work.
Why a cargo ship suits writers
A cargo ship is a working vessel, not a holiday resort. There is no entertainment programme, no shops and few other passengers. The crew are busy. The sea outside your porthole changes every hour. That leaves long, empty stretches of time, which is exactly what a draft needs.
Your cabin is usually an officer-style room with a bed, a wardrobe, a private shower and, on most ships, a desk and chair. Many have windows rather than portholes. Meals are fixed and eaten in the officers’ mess, so you never need to plan food. There is little to decide each day except what to write.
Writers who wrote aboard freighters
This is not a new idea. Two well-documented examples:
- Alex Haley. In a 1987 Washington Post article, the author of Roots said he did his best work at sea. He estimated that about 80% of Roots was written aboard various freighters, often writing from late evening until dawn.
- Horatio Clare. The British writer sailed as a writer-in-residence with Maersk Line in 2012–13, on container ships from Felixstowe to Los Angeles and from Antwerp to Montreal. The result was Down to the Sea in Ships (2014), winner of the Stanford Dolman Travel Book of the Year in 2015.
Journalist Rose George also sailed on a container ship to research Ninety Percent of Everything, her book on the shipping industry. Her talk about it is below.

Residencies at sea in 2025–26
Formal programmes are few, and they change from year to year. Treat these as examples, not open calls.
| Programme | Ship / route | What it involves |
|---|---|---|
| Twenty-Three Days at Sea | Container ship, Vancouver to Shanghai | A travelling artist residency run by Access Gallery and Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver, with support from shipowner Reederei NSB. Artists spend 23 days at sea. |
| HX Expeditions Artist in Residence | MS Roald Amundsen, Arctic Canada and Greenland | Launched in 2026 with novelist Katie Hale. She joins selected voyages, including a 21-day Baffin Bay expedition in September 2026, and runs creative sessions for guests. |
| Self-organised voyage | Any passenger-carrying cargo route | No application. You book a cabin and set your own brief. This is how most writers do it. |
The HX programme is on an expedition cruise ship, not a freighter. It is a good option if you want company and teaching, rather than solitude.
Practicalities: cabin, quiet and internet
| Factor | Was Sie erwartet | What it means for writing |
|---|---|---|
| Cabin desk | Most passenger cabins have a desk and chair | Bring a laptop stand and a cushion for long sessions |
| Noise | Constant engine hum; loud in port during cargo work | Earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones help |
| Internet | None, limited or paid, depending on ship and line | Download sources, dictionaries and maps before sailing |
| Meals | Fixed times in the officers’ mess | Natural anchors for a writing schedule |
| Hafentage | Schedules change at short notice | Plan shore leave as a bonus, not a deadline |
| Power | Ship sockets, plug type varies | Pack a universal adapter and a power bank |

How long, and how much?
Choose the voyage length to match your project. A short story or edit fits a crossing. A first draft needs weeks.
| Reise | Typische Länge | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Europe to North America | Etwa 9–14 Tage | Editing, a novella draft, a sketchbook series |
| Aranui 5, Tahiti to the Marquesas | 12 days | Writing with island visits and more company |
| Aranui 5, Austral Islands | 13 days (2026 departures) | Remote islands, varied material |
| Europe to Asia or Australia | Several weeks | A full first draft |
| Round the world | Several months | Long projects, a book-length journal |
At roughly €90–€150 per person per day, a transatlantic crossing comes to around €1,000–€1,900. Add insurance, port fees and travel to the port. See cargo ship travel cost in 2026 for full route examples.

Passenger-freighters and slow ships
The Aranui 5 in French Polynesia is a hybrid: part cargo ship, part cruise ship, carrying around 250 passengers. It delivers freight to the Marquesas and other islands. It is busier than a container ship, but it offers a fixed routine, shore visits and a strong sense of place. Read more in our guide to passenger-freighter cruises.
If you travel alone, a container ship gives the most privacy. Our solo travel on a cargo ship guide covers what that feels like day to day.

Retreat options compared
| Option | Solitude | Company | Best season |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transatlantic container ship | High | Officers and crew | Late spring to early autumn for calmer seas |
| Long route to Asia or Australia | Very high | Officers and crew | Year-round; check monsoon seasons |
| Aranui 5 | Medium | Other passengers | Year-round programme |
| Expedition residency | Low | Guests and expedition team | Fixed voyage dates |
Tips
- Set a clear project and word or page target before you board.
- Write at the same times each day, using meals as anchors.
- Assume no internet. Anything online is a bonus.
- Expect delays. Keep flexible dates at both ends.
- Ask the captain politely if you may visit the bridge. It is good material.
- Back up your work daily to a USB stick or second device.
