Sea Freight Transit Times from the UK: How Long Does Shipping Take? (2026 Table)

Last updated: 22 October 2026

“How long will it take?” is the first question everyone asks about sea freight. The answer depends on the route, the shipping line’s rotation, how many ports the ship calls at, and events like canal closures. Here are typical sea freight transit times from the UK in 2026, and the factors that add or save time.

UK sea freight transit times (port to port)

DestinationTypical port-to-port timeNotes
France, Spain, Portugal (short sea)2–7 daysOften by road ferry rather than container ship
USA east coast (New York, Baltimore, Savannah)10–14 daysDirect transatlantic services
USA west coast (Los Angeles, Oakland)4–5 weeksVia the Panama Canal
Canada (Halifax, Montreal)8–12 daysSt Lawrence ice can slow winter sailings
Caribbean2–3 weeksOften via transhipment hubs
Brazil and Argentina3–5 weeksEast coast of South America services
West Africa (Tema, Lagos)2–4 weeksRo-ro and container services
South Africa (Durban, Cape Town)3–4 weeks
UAE (Jebel Ali)3–4 weeks via Suez5–6 weeks via the Cape
India (Nhava Sheva, Mundra)3–5 weeks
Singapore4–5 weeksMajor transhipment hub
China (Shanghai, Ningbo)5–7 weeks
Japan6–7 weeks

Transit times depend on the route, the number of port calls and the ship’s speed.

Door-to-door time

Port-to-port time is only part of the journey. For a full picture, add:

  • Collection and export customs: 2–7 days
  • Waiting for the vessel cut-off and sailing: up to a week
  • Destination port handling and customs: 3–10 days
  • Inland delivery: 1–5 days

For example, a UK to Australia removal usually takes 8–12 weeks door to door, even though the ship is at sea for 5–7 weeks. See our international removals guide.

What causes delays?

  1. Route diversions. When Red Sea routes are unsafe, Asia and Middle East services go around the Cape of Good Hope, adding around 1–2 weeks.
  2. Canal restrictions. Panama Canal draught limits in drought years can reduce bookings and add waiting time.
  3. Port congestion, especially around peak seasons and holidays such as Chinese New Year
  4. Weather, including Atlantic storms, typhoons and winter ice
  5. Blank sailings, when a line cancels a scheduled departure
  6. Customs inspections, which are random or triggered by paperwork errors
  7. Transhipment, when a container changes ships at a hub

Port time at each end adds days to the total journey.

How to speed things up

  • Book early and confirm the vessel cut-off date
  • Choose direct services over transhipment where possible
  • Prepare complete paperwork, including the commercial invoice, packing list and HS codes
  • Choose FCL (a full container) over LCL (shared) if timing is critical
  • Use a forwarder with strong agents at destination

Frequently asked questions

How long does sea freight take from the UK to Australia?

About 5–7 weeks port to port, or 8–12 weeks door to door for household goods.

How long does sea freight take from the UK to the USA?

About 10–14 days to the east coast and 4–5 weeks to the west coast via Panama.

Why is my shipment delayed?

Common causes are route diversions, port congestion, weather, blank sailings and customs inspections.

Is LCL slower than FCL?

Yes, usually by several days to a couple of weeks, because shared containers must be consolidated and unpacked at each end.

How can I track my shipment?

Use your container number or bill of lading on the shipping line’s website, or a ship-tracking site. See our guide to tracking a ship.
