Singapore is the crossroads of Asian shipping, and sailing there from Europe on a container ship is a classic long voyage. You follow one of the world’s busiest trade lanes, through the Mediterranean, the Suez Canal, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, before arriving in one of the planet’s most impressive ports.
Routes from Europe to Singapore
| Route | Typical departure ports | Typical sea time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Via Suez Canal | Southampton, London Gateway, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp, Le Havre | About 3.5–4.5 weeks | Passes the Mediterranean, Red Sea and Indian Ocean |
| Via Cape of Good Hope | Same northern European ports | About 5–6 weeks | Used when Red Sea routes are unsafe |
| From the Mediterranean | Genoa, La Spezia, Valencia, Piraeus | About 3 weeks | Shorter, if you start in southern Europe |
Ports of call on the way can include Tangier, Port Said, Jeddah, Colombo, Port Klang and others, depending on the rotation. Many services continue on to China, Korea and Japan. See cargo ship travel to Japan.

Highlights of the voyage
- The Suez Canal: a day-long transit through the desert. Read our Suez Canal guide.
- The Indian Ocean: long, warm sea days with flying fish and dolphins
- The Strait of Malacca: one of the busiest waterways on Earth, crowded with ships
- Arriving in Singapore: hundreds of ships at anchor and a futuristic skyline
How much does it cost?
Fares are usually US$90–150 per person per day, including cabin and meals. A four-week voyage typically costs around US$2,500–4,200 per person, plus booking fees, port taxes and insurance.

Entry rules
- Visas: UK passport holders can usually visit Singapore visa-free for short stays. Check current rules.
- SG Arrival Card: required for all travellers, completed online before arrival
- Ports of call: you may need visas to go ashore elsewhere on the route, for example in Egypt, Saudi Arabia or Sri Lanka. Some ports do not allow passengers ashore at all.
- Health: check vaccination advice for all ports of call with a travel clinic
Security on the route
Shipping lines monitor security in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden closely and reroute ships around Africa when needed. That can change your journey time and ports of call, so flexibility is essential. Read is freighter travel safe?
Combining with overland travel
Singapore is a great starting point for exploring Southeast Asia by train and bus, or for continuing by sea to Australia. Many slow travellers sail one way and travel overland the other.
