Antarctica by Ship from the UK: How to Get There (2026)

Last updated: 4 November 2026

The most practical way to reach Antarctica by ship from the UK is to fly to Ushuaia in Argentina and join a 10–12 day expedition cruise across the Drake Passage. The crossing takes about two days each way. If you want to skip the Drake, fly-cruises from Punta Arenas in Chile land you on King George Island in about two hours. There is no regular cargo or passenger-freighter service to Antarctica.

Quick answer
  • Main gateway: Ushuaia, Argentina. Fly London to Buenos Aires, then connect south.
  • Classic Antarctic Peninsula voyages run 10–13 days. Indicative 2026–27 fares start around £7,950 per person.
  • Fly-cruises from Punta Arenas cut out the Drake Passage but cost more (8 days from about £17,882).
  • The season runs from November to March, with some ships staying into early April.
  • The refitted RMS St Helena will nicht sail to Antarctica in 2026–27. Terra Nova has swapped in another ship.

Can you reach Antarctica by cargo ship?

No. We know of no freighter that sells berths to Antarctica. Research-station supply ships carry scientists and staff, not paying tourists. Every leisure visitor goes on an expedition ship run by a tour operator, usually a member of IAATO (the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators).

The good news for freighter fans: expedition ships are small, working vessels. Many carry 100–200 guests, with lectures, a mud room and Zodiac boats instead of casinos.

The main routes from the UK

You cannot sail directly from a UK port on a regular Antarctic voyage. You fly to South America, then board a ship. There are four realistic options.

The four main ways to reach Antarctica by ship. Prices are indicative.

1. Ushuaia and the Drake Passage

Ushuaia, at the tip of Argentina, is where most Antarctic ships start and finish. From London you fly to Buenos Aires, then take a domestic flight to Ushuaia. Most travellers allow a spare night at each end in case of delays.

The Drake Passage crossing takes about two days. It can be calm or very rough. Days at sea are filled with lectures, bird-watching from the bridge and safety briefings.

2. Fly-cruises from Punta Arenas

Antarctica21 flies guests from Punta Arenas, Chile, to King George Island in the South Shetlands. The flight takes about two hours. You then board a small ship of up to 88 guests. Itineraries range from 6 days (Antarctica Express) to 18 days with South Georgia. Weather can delay flights, so build in slack.

Some lines also sell “sail one way, fly the other” trips. You cross the Drake once by ship and fly the other way.

3. Longer voyages via the Falklands and South Georgia

Voyages of 20–21 days add the Falkland Islands and South Georgia to the Peninsula. They start and end in Ushuaia. They suit wildlife lovers who want king penguin colonies and Shackleton history.

What happened to the RMS St Helena?

The former Royal Mail Ship St Helena was being refitted by Terra Nova Expeditions for Antarctic voyages, with a first departure planned for December 2026. That plan has changed. Terra Nova said the ship could not be repositioned from the Arabian Gulf safely or in time, because of the Middle East security situation. The ship remains in the Dubai area.

For 2026–27, Terra Nova is using a replacement vessel on a three-year charter, renamed Terra Nova Adventurer. It was built in 1972 as a Baltic ferry and later sailed as G Adventures’ Expedition. Check the operator for current dates, ports and fares.

One-way voyages to and from Europe

Ships reposition between the Arctic and Antarctica every year. Oceanwide’s Plancius left Vlissingen in the Netherlands in late September 2026 for Puerto Madryn, Argentina. Its first guest expedition, 20 nights via the Falklands and South Georgia, ends in Ushuaia.

The return leg is the one to watch. Oceanwide’s Atlantic Odyssey on Plancius sails north in spring 2027:

Ending in Cape Verde leaves only a short flight back to Europe. It is the closest thing to sailing home from Antarctica.

IAATO rules that shape your trip

  • No more than 100 people ashore from a ship at one time.
  • Ships carrying more than 500 passengers may not land anyone. Big cruise ships offer scenic cruising only.
  • Ships with 201–500 passengers face stricter limits on where and when they land.
  • Only one ship at a landing site at a time, with about one guide for every 20 guests.

Antarctica had 118,491 visitors in 2024–25, according to IAATO. If going ashore matters to you, pick a ship under 200 passengers.

When to go: season guide

MonthWas Sie erwartetAm besten geeignet für
NovemberSeason opens. Fresh snow and heavy sea ice.Pristine scenery, penguin courtship
December–JanuaryPeak season. Longest days, mildest weather.Penguin chicks, long hours ashore
February–MarchLess ice, more whales.Whale watching, Antarctic Circle crossings
Late March–AprilSeason ends. Ships reposition north.One-way voyages such as the Atlantic Odyssey

Tips

  1. Book 12–18 months ahead for peak December and January sailings.
  2. Look for last-minute discounts if you are flexible. Unsold cabins are often cut in price.
  3. Buy travel insurance with emergency evacuation cover. Many operators require it.
  4. Pack seasickness remedies for the Drake Passage, or choose a fly-cruise.
  5. Arrive in Ushuaia or Punta Arenas at least a day early.
  6. Check what is included: parkas, boots, flights, kayaking and camping often vary.
