From a farmhouse in Tuscany to a flat in Milan, removals to Italy are a long road trip, about 1,000 to 2,000 miles. Most moves go by road through France and the Alpine tunnels, with ferries to Sicily and Sardinia. Since Brexit, customs paperwork matters too. Here is what removals to Italy cost in 2026 and how it works.
Removals to Italy: typical costs in 2026| Destination | 2–3 bedroom house (full load) | Part load (about 200–400 cu ft) | Typical transit (full load) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Milan, Lombardy, Lake Como | £3,000–£4,800 | £1,200–£2,200 | 3–4 days |
| Piedmont, Liguria | £3,000–£4,800 | £1,200–£2,200 | 3–4 days |
| Tuscany, Umbria, Le Marche | £3,300–£5,200 | £1,300–£2,400 | 3–5 days |
| Rome, Lazio, Abruzzo | £3,500–£5,500 | £1,400–£2,500 | 4–5 days |
| Puglia, Calabria, Campania | £3,800–£6,000 | £1,500–£2,800 | 4–6 days |
| Sicily, Sardinia | £4,200–£6,800 | £1,700–£3,200 | 5–8 days |
Indicative prices. Hilltop villages, narrow lanes and historic centres with traffic restrictions (ZTL) often need a smaller shuttle vehicle.

Access: the hidden cost of Italian removals
Many Italian homes are in places large lorries can’t reach:
- ZTL zones: limited traffic zones in historic centres need permits for vehicles.
- Hill towns: steep, narrow lanes mean goods are moved into a small van (a shuttle).
- Stairs and lifts: older palazzi often have no lift, and an external furniture lift may be needed.
- Country roads: farmhouses at the end of unmade roads may need a 4×4 or a smaller vehicle.
Send your mover photos and a map pin of the access before you get a quote.
Customs after Brexit
Household goods moving from Great Britain to Italy count as an import into the EU.
- Relief for transfer of residence: used belongings you have owned for over six months can usually enter free of duty and VAT.
- Documents: an inventory, your passport, your Italian residence certificate or a declaration of intent to reside, your codice fiscale and proof of your UK residence
- Timing: goods should normally arrive within 12 months of your move.
- Second homes: relief may also apply with conditions, so check before you book.

Residency and the codice fiscale
Before you move, get your codice fiscale (Italian tax code) from an Italian consulate or the local Agenzia delle Entrate. After arrival, register your residence (residenza) at the town hall (comune). Both are needed for customs relief, utilities and healthcare.
Tips for a smooth move
- Get three quotes from companies with regular Italian runs.
- Share access photos with each remover.
- Ask about storage if your Italian purchase completes late.
- Use a part load for smaller moves, as it can cost half the price.
- Check the insurance, especially for fragile antiques.
