Ireland is close, English-speaking and has a Common Travel Area with the UK, so removals to Ireland are among the simplest international moves. Removals vans cross the Irish Sea on regular ferries, and most moves are delivered within a few days. Since Brexit, though, moving goods from Great Britain to the Republic of Ireland needs customs paperwork. Here is how it works in 2026.

Customs after Brexit

The Republic of Ireland is in the EU, so household goods from Great Britain are imports.

• Transfer of residence relief: used personal belongings you have owned for at least six months can usually enter free of duty and VAT. You apply to Irish Revenue.
• Documents: an inventory, your passport, proof of your previous UK residence (at least 12 months) and proof of your new Irish address
• Timing: goods normally need to arrive within 12 months of your move.
• Vehicles: cars need Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT). Transfer of residence relief may also apply to your car.

Moving to Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland is part of the UK, so household goods moving from Great Britain don’t go through EU customs in the same way. Moves between Northern Ireland and the Republic are road moves across an open border.

How long do removals to Ireland take?

• Full load: usually 1–3 days door to door
• Part load: usually 1–2 weeks, depending on the next run
• Book ahead: 3–6 weeks, more in summer

Tips for a smooth move

1. Get three quotes from companies doing regular Irish runs.
2. Ask if the customs paperwork and Revenue relief are included.
3. Check access to rural Irish properties: narrow lanes and gates.
4. Use a part load for smaller moves.
