It is the only scheduled long-distance passenger ship on the coast, and its future after 2027 is undecided.

Quick answer

Ship: Sarfaq Ittuk, built 1992, run by Arctic Umiaq Line (a Royal Arctic Line subsidiary).

Route: about 1,000 km from Qaqortoq in the south to Ilulissat in Disko Bay, 12 ports.

Season: roughly spring to January; Ilulissat is served from about May. July and August are busiest.

Local boats: Disko Line runs small passenger boats around Disko Bay and Uummannaq.

Cargo ships: Royal Arctic Line carries freight, not paying passengers, from Denmark.

The Sarfaq Ittuk: Greenland’s coastal passenger ship

The Sarfaq Ittuk is often called Greenland’s Hurtigruten. It is a working ferry, not a cruise ship. Locals use it to visit family, move goods and travel between towns that have no roads between them. Visitors share the same café and decks.

The ship was built in 1992. It carries about 22,000 passengers a year. Arctic Umiaq Line lists 14 four-bed cabins with window and bathroom, 12 suites, one “igloo suite” and around 120 couchettes. Couchette passengers use lockable shared showers.

In 2025 the Greenland government extended its service contract for 2026 and 2027. A new ferry would need a contract of at least 15 years and about two years to build. Politicians will decide after seeing how the new airports change travel. So if you want to sail it, 2026 and 2027 are safe bets; later years are not.

Your options for travelling by sea in Greenland in 2026.

Route and ports

The ship makes a weekly loop along the west coast. It is the only passenger link by sea to Uummannaq. Boats run in spring, summer and autumn; in winter Air Greenland takes over. Disko Line also runs some boat transfers in South Greenland.

Can you travel on a Royal Arctic Line cargo ship?

Not in the usual sense. Royal Arctic Line holds the monopoly on sea freight to, from and within Greenland. Its container ships sail from Aalborg (with calls in Aarhus) to Nuuk and other ports, roughly monthly to smaller places in the ice-free season. It does not sell passenger berths to the public. Its passenger arm is Arctic Umiaq Line, which runs the Sarfaq Ittuk. You can ship gear on Royal Arctic Line; allow around four weeks to reach smaller ports.
