A big container ship might be in port for less than a day; a smaller ship at a busy port can stay longer, and ro-ro or general cargo ships sometimes stay two or three days. Delays from weather, congestion or cargo can add hours – or take them away.

That makes shore leave on a freighter different from a cruise. There is no fixed shore excursion programme. You go ashore when the captain agrees, and you come back well before the ship sails.

Cargo operations set the length of every port stay.

Permission, passes and port security

Ports operate under international port security rules (the ISPS Code), so you cannot simply walk off the ship. Typically:

The captain or chief officer confirms whether passengers may go ashore.

Immigration may need to check passports, sometimes on board.

You may receive a shore pass or be added to a list at the gate.

You leave via a marked walkway or terminal shuttle, wearing any safety gear provided.

The ship’s port agent can often help with taxis and information.

Visas and immigration

Being on a ship doesn’t exempt you from entry rules. Some countries let passengers go ashore without a visa for a short stay; others require a full visa even to step onto the quay. The United States, for example, generally requires travellers to have the right visa or travel authorisation to land. Check every country on your route before you book, and keep your passport valid for at least six months.

Tip: If you don’t have the right visa for a port, plan to stay on board. Watching cargo operations from the deck is fascinating in its own right.

Going ashore from a cargo ship: the key rules.

Making the most of a port day

Ask the time twice: confirm the “all aboard” time with the officer on duty, and set alarms.

Carry the agent’s number and the ship’s name and terminal.

Use a seafarers’ centre: many ports have one with WiFi, a shop and transport into town.

Stay close: pick sights near the port rather than a long day trip.

Bring local cash for taxis and snacks.

Restock snacks, toiletries and anything you’ve run out of.

What if you miss the ship?

The ship won’t wait. If you miss it, you will have to pay to rejoin at the next port or travel home yourself, and insurance may not cover it. Always build in a large buffer. If anything goes wrong, call the port agent immediately.

A port-day checklist

☐ Captain’s permission confirmed.

☐ “All aboard” time written down and alarms set.

☐ Passport, shore pass and printed ship details.

☐ Port agent’s phone number saved.

☐ Local cash and a bank card.

☐ Charged phone and power bank.

☐ Sensible shoes for walking across the terminal.

☐ Back at the gate at least two hours before departure.

With a little preparation, shore leave on a freighter can be the highlight of a voyage: a market in Morocco, a beach in the Caribbean or a walk through an old Hanseatic city.

Best ports for shore leave

Some of the most rewarding port calls are those with terminals close to the city, such as many in the Mediterraneo, Amburgo where the port is part of the city, and Caribbean islands (see cargo ship to the Caribbean).
