Planning for slack is part of the trip.

Quick answer

Sea-Intelligence measured global schedule reliability at 50.6% in September 2026. Late ships averaged 6.65 days behind.

Main causes: port congestion, weather, blank sailings and route diversions such as the Cape of Good Hope detour.

Embarkation dates can move by days, and ports can be added or skipped with little notice.

How extra days are charged depends on your agent’s terms. Ask before you pay.

Book flexible flights, add buffer hotel nights and buy insurance with travel-delay cover.

How common are freighter delays in 2026?

The best public measure is Sea-Intelligence’s Global Liner Performance (GLP) report. It tracks the share of container vessels arriving within one day of schedule. It covers cargo, not passengers, but passengers sail on these same ships.

2026 began with reliability of 62.4% in January. It fell to 59.0% in February and reached a 2026 high in May. It then dropped to 56.4% in July and 49.9% in August. August was the lowest since September 2022, with Sea-Intelligence pointing to congestion at Asian ports. September recovered slightly to 50.6%.

Month (2026)

Schedule reliability

Note

January

62.4%

Year opens near 2025 levels

February

59.0%

Dip

July

56.4%

Decline begins

August

49.9%

Lowest since Sept 2022; late ships 6.81 days behind

September

50.6%

Late ships 6.65 days behind

Carriers differ. In September 2026 Maersk was the most reliable of the top 13 carriers at 64.8%; Wan Hai was lowest at 26.7%. For comparison, reliability held in roughly the 65% range for much of 2025.

The four usual reasons a cargo ship falls behind schedule.

Why cargo ship schedules shift

Port congestion

Container ships book berth windows. Miss one and the ship may wait at anchor for days. Congestion at Asian hubs drove the August 2026 slump.

Weather

Masters slow down or reroute around storms, and pilots may stop boarding in heavy weather. Our guide to a cargo ship in a storm explains what that feels like on board.

Blank sailings and port swaps

A blank sailing is a cancelled departure on a regular service, often when cargo demand is weak. Lines also add, swap or omit ports to recover time. Your joining or leaving port can change as a result.

Canal and chokepoint disruption

From late 2023, attacks on shipping pushed most container lines away from the Red Sea and around the Cape of Good Hope. That detour adds well over a week on Asia–Europe routes. The return has been stop-start. Maersk made test transits in late 2025, then paused again in early 2026 after US–Iran hostilities. MSC began restoring Suez routings on selected services in August 2026. By the end of August, Sea-Intelligence estimated only 19% of Asia–North Europe westbound services used Suez. Read our Suez Canal transit guide for the route itself.

The Panama Canal shows the same risk. Drought in 2023, one of the driest years on record there, lowered Gatun Lake. The canal cut daily transits and draught limits, causing queues. Restrictions were lifted in mid-2024. See our Panama Canal transit guide.

Passenger berths follow the ship’s commercial schedule.

Watch: why container shipping schedules are so fragile

What passenger terms usually cover

Freighter passengers are not cruise guests.
