To reach the islands you fly. Once there, you can travel between islands on small public speedboats called lanchas – the closest thing to a working boat passage for independent travellers.

Quick answer

Cargo ships from Guayaquil supply the islands but offer no public passenger service.

Flights from Quito or Guayaquil land at Baltra or San Cristóbal.

Foreign adults pay a US$200 park entry fee plus a US$20 Transit Control Card.

Public speedboats link Santa Cruz with San Cristóbal, Isabela and Floreana.

Each speedboat crossing takes about 2–3 hours and costs roughly US$30–60.

Can you travel to the Galapagos on a cargo ship?

Not as a paying passenger. The islands depend on a small fleet of cargo vessels that sail from Guayaquil, about 1,000 km to the east. They bring in almost everything the 30,000-odd residents need. In July 2023, for example, Ecuador added the Norwegian-built Cygnus, with a capacity of 1,700 tonnes, after one of the regular supply ships was damaged. Its first run was Guayaquil to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristóbal.

We found no operator selling cabins on these ships in 2026. Mainstream travel guides describe flights as the only way in for visitors. The islands also have strict biosecurity rules. Every arrival goes through inspection, which is far easier to manage at the airports. If you hear of a berth on a supply ship, treat it as an informal arrangement with no guarantees. Do not plan a trip around it.

If you want a long ocean passage on a working ship, look at passenger-freighters you can book like a cruise. You could also try a remote supply-ship voyage such as the Pitcairn Island supply ship.

How the inter-island boats work

Inside the archipelago, boats do work like a public service. Fast fibreglass launches with big outboard engines run daily between the inhabited islands. Locals call them lanchas o fibras. Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz is the hub. San Cristóbal and Isabela have no direct link to each other, so you change at Santa Cruz.

Inter-island speedboats all run via Santa Cruz.

Ruta

Typical departures

Crossing time

Indicative fare (one way)

Santa Cruz → San Cristóbal

07:00, 14:00–15:00

2–3 hours

US$30–45

San Cristóbal → Santa Cruz

07:00, 15:00

2–3 hours

US$30–45

Santa Cruz → Isabela

07:00, 14:00–15:00

2–3 hours

US$30–50

Isabela → Santa Cruz

06:00, 14:00–15:00

2–3 hours

US$30–50

Santa Cruz ↔ Floreana

08:00 out, 15:00 back

Unas 2 horas

US$50–60

Times shift with the season and operator, so confirm locally. Put valuables and electronics in a dry bag.

Fees and paperwork for 2026

The Galapagos has some of the strictest entry rules of any destination. The park entrance fee for foreign adults doubled to US$200 in 2024. It was the first rise in more than three decades. Children under 12 pay US$100. A live-aboard cruise or yacht moves between islands overnight. It reaches remote visitor sites the public boats never serve. Land-based island-hopping uses hotels on Santa Cruz, San Cristóbal and Isabela, with lanchas between them and day tours from each base. It is cheaper and more flexible, but you spend more time in transit.

A small inter-island airline also flies light aircraft between the islands. Boats usually leave Santa Cruz around 07:00 and in the mid-afternoon.

How much do Galapagos inter-island ferries cost?

Expect roughly US$30 to US$50 one way between Santa Cruz and San Cristóbal or Isabela, and about US$50 to US$60 to Floreana, plus small water taxi fees.

Is there a direct boat from San Cristóbal to Isabela?

No. Public speedboats connect each island with Santa Cruz, so you change there and usually stay a night.

When are Galapagos seas calmest?

The warm season from December to May generally brings calmer seas.
